UHMW-PE is a subset of thermoplastic polyethylene. Also known as HMPE or HPPE, it has an extremely long chain with a molecular weight typically between 2 and 6 million u. Longer chains are used to more efficiently transfer the load to the polymer backbone by enhancing intermolecular interactions. This results in a very tough material. Has the highest impact strength of any thermoplastic currently manufactured.
